Important: Per Club Sports rules, all team members must fill out the 2023-24 Club Sport Waivers & Code of Conduct Forms. (Note that this form will likely only work for current students, undergraduates and graduates. For those who are not Yale students but would like to ride with us, please fill out the waiver linked on the How to Join page and email it to us.) Instructions for the club sports forms are below:
All team members must fill out the Club Sport Waiver and Code of Conduct Forms before they practice. Anyone trying out or anyone who participates even once should also fill out the forms! You need to sign both forms and then “check out” (hit checkout twice to finalize) – you should get the message “your order successfully processed.” Link
New for 2023:
The New Haven Bicycling Club (NHBC) asks that you please sign a waiver before riding with them. We often use the Tuesday/Thursday NHBC rides as training rides for the team.
Contact us to be added to the team GroupMe chat, where we coordinate rides. Also check out the New Haven Bike Rides page on Facebook if you want to stay up to date on riding and racing in the area!
GENERAL GROUP RIDE INFORMATION
SO YOU'RE NEW TO GROUP RIDING?
First and foremost, check your tires and the weather. Make sure tires are filled and you are dressed appropriately; when in doubt, dress warmer and in layers!
After that, here are some things to remember to bring on every ride:
A road bike (unless otherwise specified)
Helmet
Water bottles and snacks
Photo ID and a few dollars in case of ice cream stop or emergency
Cell phone
Spare tube, tire levers and a pocket pump (ask your local bike shop)
Head and tail lights for rides in the evening
Show up with your bike in good working condition, with tires inflated and ready to ride. Devil's Gear or College Street Cycles will be happy to help you with a tune up! If you’re an undergrad, also check out the Benjamin Franklin Bike Shop!
If you are new to a ride, show up a few minutes ahead of time and introduce yourself to the ride leaders. Tell them you are new. Let them know if you don't know the area.
If you have questions about group riding or ride preparation and are on one of the beginner rides listed, ask the ride leaders or other riders! Most of us love talking about bicycling.
Use the restroom and fill water bottles BEFORE the advertised leaving time. Expect that the ride will leave at its advertised time.
Pay attention to the advertised mileage and speed of group rides. Rides are more fun when everyone is on the same page about what the ride should be. If you want/need to ride faster or slower than the group, that ride may not be right for you.
Bring a map or smart phone with you if you don't know the area, just in case you get separated from the group or have an emergency.
